Preparing for the HEAT

multipurpose crops.JPG

By the time September arrives the days start to get hot, quite hot and plants like tomatoes and leafy greens and even pumpkins that have been perfectly happy in the middle of the day start to wilt and look stressed.

This is the time to have on hand some seedlings of ‘support’ species such as moringa, sesbania, pigeon pea, Mexican daisy, and Gliricidia Sepium .  These can be planted in strategic locations to shelter the more delicate plants from the sun in the middle of the day.  Now is also the time to start planting peanuts and mung beans to keep the soil covered  through the hot period.
